Have You Checked In On Your Team?

May 28, 2023

Last week, I was traveling to meet a friend at a conference.

This trip has been in the making for months, so I was excited.

But this is what happens when busy people make plans. It can take a bit of time to become a reality.

While at a restaurant, a man sitting next to us began to tell me about his recent heart attack.

He was a retired marine and he was discharged from the VA hospital a few days before we met.

He mentioned that his arteries were clean when the doctors checked him during surgery.

And he had a heart attack. Why?

According to him, it’s because of stress. Here’s his story.

This made me think about how we often don’t realize that our team members are under stress but don’t have any visible signs. When was the last time you checked on your team? Not just about work.

A simple “how are you feeling?” or “do you have enough support?” These two questions can go a long way and demonstrate care for your team. The key is to listen to their responses and give them your full attention; that means no texting or checking email while they are talking.

If you have been busy, check on your team, they’ll appreciate it.

That’s it for this week.

Always wishing you the best,

Dr. Beckford
