The Hidden Burnout Trap

Sep 03, 2023

Have you ever wondered why staff burnout may be an issue, even in companies with a supportive and nurturing culture?

That's because burnout doesn't discriminate; it can sneak into any workplace, regardless of how good it seems.

This week, we're exploring the perplexing realm of burnout in "good" companies, shedding light on why it happens, how it often remains hidden, and what you can do about it.

At first glance, your company might appear to be a haven of positivity – flexible hours, team-building activities, and a supportive leadership team.

But here's the truth: burnout doesn't play by the rules.

Recognizing burnout in a "good" company can be like trying to spot a chameleon in a rainforest.

The signs will elude you because they don't conform to your stereotypical expectations of burnout.

For example, in the superstar employee. You know, the one that always goes above and beyond. The one that gets tasks done quickly and is always available.

But beneath this stellar output, they’re silently struggling to keep up with the high expectations but might be afraid to share for fear of judgment.

Great benefits might include mental health support, but the daily grind can still affect employees' well-being.

Flexible work arrangements are a fantastic benefit. However, employees need effective work-life boundaries to maintain balance without needing to always be on.

Think of someone who rarely takes time off despite having ample vacation days.

They enjoy a work-from-home option and regular team-building events. But you don't see the worker’s inability to disconnect from work, even during vacations and weekends.

The situation may eventually lead to burnout.

So, what's the remedy when you sense burnout creeping into your team, even within a "good" company?

Team retreats are one option.

But why do a retreat, especially when your company is already a fantastic workplace?

While foosball tournaments and free lunches build camaraderie, retreats create deeper connections.

Your benefits package provides essential security and stability; retreats elevate your well-being strategy.  The result? Improved performance, innovation, and a more robust talent pool.

Think of retreats as an investment in your employees' growth and your company's long-term success. Incorporating retreats into your well-being strategy can be a proactive approach to combat burnout, even when you already offer outstanding benefits.

These advantages and your existing perks create a comprehensive well-being strategy that reduces your employees' burnout risk.

That’s all for this week.

Always wishing you the best,
