What Can We Learn About Selfcare From Kids?
Jun 12, 2022
When did life become so complicated?
Although we go through ups and downs, we can make selfcare simple.
Yes, selfcare can be simple. It is a choice to do what makes us happy.
If we think about life through the lens of a child, we notice there is a lot to learn.
Here are three ways we can learn about the art of selfcare by just listening to our “inner kid”.
Children find joy in simple pleasures: When was the last time you found joy in a simple pleasure? I was talking with a friend about her recent trip to the beach. She and her husband took their toddler to the beach on a sunny day. A few minutes after they arrived, heavy rain started. The couple held their son’s hand and started running to the car. She noticed that her son’s face lit up and he began laughing out loud because he was having so much fun even though he was soaked. The adults, on the other hand, were just thinking about staying dry.
There are no rules in selfcare: Children rarely play by the rules and love to make up their own rules. The same goes for selfcare. Selfcare is a personal process, therefore no rules are needed. Your selfcare routine will look different than your peers, and that is OK. Just as we teach our children to stay true to who they are and find their own path. We can apply this lesson to our selfcare routine.
Take care of your emotions: Children, especially toddlers are great at this! I have a 3-year-old son, and he will let me know if he is upset with me and if I did something he doesn’t like. This had me thinking, when did we stop taking care of our emotions? When did we begin neglecting our emotions for others? Three-year-olds have boundaries, and so should we! Therefore we should not feel guilty for taking care of our emotions and ourselves.
As we enter this week, let’s take a page from our inner kid and use it to build our selfcare routine.
Always wishing you the best,
Dr. Beckford
