How to Be Less Stressed Out (1 Power Move)
Jul 28, 2024
Happy Sunday, Leaders!
On Friday, I led a workshop on stress management and avoiding burnout for a private practice.
The practice is profitable.
Things are going well.
But the practice owner asked me to lead her team retreat because she didn’t want the team to burn out.
I asked a series of questions.
"How many of you use your phone for an alarm?"
Every hand went up.
But that isn't the problem.
I asked a follow-up question.
"How many of you have the phone next to your bed?"
Every hand went up.
"How many of you start scrolling after picking up the phone?"
There was laughter. Every hand stayed up.
And that's the start of the problem.
Think about it.
Stuff enters your mind before you leave the house.
You wake up and see a flood of emails.
Your mind starts racing.
Stress hits you before you even brush your teeth.
Scrolling through social media, you see bad news.
Or someone on vacation, and you have to work.
Your mood plummets. The stress level rises.
The energy isn’t good.
Or what used to happen to me.
A text message from a colleague pops up.
It's about a problem at work.
Your heart rate increases.
Stress is now your breakfast.
Your day hasn’t even started, and you're already stressed.
Here's a simple power move you can use.
Put the phone away.
Or use an old fashioned alarm clock.
If you want to use your phone, place it in airplane mode.
So you won't get all the notifications.
Still use it for an alarm, but put it in a different room where you have to walk to reach it.
That action of getting out of bed will keep you in motion.
Get up, turn it off, and then start your day.
Instead of using the phone:
- Meditate.
- Breathe deeply
- Say an affirmation.
- Read something positive.
- Focus on your morning routine.
This requires an intentional action.
I get it.
It's easy to grab the phone.
But the stress that follows isn't worth it.
Try this power move.
Start your day differently.
I guarantee it will change your life.
It changed mine.
Wishing you a stress-free week ahead,
Dr. Beckford
