I Thought Exhaustion Was Success
Aug 10, 2025
A few years ago, I made a decision that scared me.
I decided to put myself first.
Not in the “take a bubble bath” way.
In the real way where I scaled back.
Stopped overcommitting, and made space for my own health.
Back then, my calendar was still full.
I was a busy ER doctor.
10 hour shifts that turned into twelve.
Charting until my eyes blurred.
Family, meetings, committees, speaking engagements.
I had been living that way for years.
Always on.
Always moving.
But I was tired all the time.
And I told myself this was what successful women do.
But my body kept the receipts.
Weight gain that did not make sense.
Moods I could not explain.
Interrupted sleep patterns.
And then I decided I’d had enough.
It was time for something different.
So I restructured my life.
I learned to earn differently.
I built rest into my routine like it was a meeting with my most important client.
And the more I did it, the more my health and my life changed.
Fast forward to this week and my time in Jamaica.
The water was quiet.
The sand was soft.
And my mind was at ease. Here is the difference.
On past vacations, my body would crash.
It would take three days just to stop feeling tired.
And by the time I started to feel human, it was time to go home.
This time, I arrived already rested.
No guilt about slowing down.
No frantic catching up in my head.
And it hit me.
This is the shift so many high-performing women never get to experience.
Not a break from burnout.
A life without burnout in the first place.
And they think a few days away will help. But it doesn’
It is why I teach my clients, executive women who have been on for decades, to make rest part of the plan, not the reward.
Because you cannot heal a body you are still running into the ground.
And you cannot lead at your best if you are running on fumes.
You do not have to earn rest.
And you do not have to wait until burnout forces you to take it.
Your health will thank you.
Your body will respond.
And you will be more powerful than you have felt in years.
When was the last time you arrived somewhere already rested?
If you are ready to build that kind of life, I can help.
Rooting for you,
