5 Stages of Burnout (And How to Escape Them NOW)

Sep 22, 2024

You’ve been holding on, haven’t you?

Holding onto the hope that maybe, just maybe, things will change.

That maybe, next week, or next month, or after that big project is finally done, you’ll breathe easier.

But deep down, you’re disillusioned.

You know that despite the promises, despite the "wellness" initiatives and the occasional weekend off, the cycle never ends.

The stress?

It’s always there.

No amount of extra coffee or quick-fix solutions can hide the truth — you're burning out, slowly but surely.

But burnout doesn't happen overnight.

It creeps up on you, phase by phase, until you're so deep in it, you can hardly see a way out.

Let’s talk about the 5 phases of burnout, specifically what it looks like for women who carry the weight of work, family, and everything in between.

Phase 1 - The Honeymoon Phase:

At first, you feel great.  There’s enthusiasm, excitement, and motivation.

You might even feel invincible, thinking you can juggle it all.

New projects? Bring them on.

Helping your kids with school while finishing that report? No problem.

You have balance. Life is beautiful.

While it feels great to be on top of things, this phase is where small habits can set the tone for long-term sustainability. The key is prevention.

Phase 2 - Onset of Stress:

It begins to weigh on you.

You start waking up tired, dreading the commute to work, but you push through because *that’s what you’ve always done*.

Maybe you're snapping at loved ones or finding it harder to focus at meetings.

Your "to-do" list feels endless, and yet, you're constantly adding more to it.

You think you can still handle it, but stress is slowly building up

This is the phase where you're starting to feel worn out.

At this phase, you're aware something is off, but things haven’t spiraled out of control yet. It’s important to intervene early and reassess your workload and stress management.

Phase 3 - Chronic Stress:

Now, stress isn’t something that comes and goes.

You wake up exhausted, sit in the car dreading the workday ahead.

The tears before walking into work start becoming more frequent.

There’s a permanent knot in your stomach, a sense of overwhelm that lingers even when you're trying to relax.

You’ve started skipping lunches, staying up later to "catch up," and those weekends?

They’re spent recovering from the week instead of enjoying life.

Physical exhaustion, headaches, poor concentration, and feeling disconnected from your work or loved ones.

Here, stress has become a constant companion, and you're probably feeling worn down. You’ll need to revamp your routines and prioritize recovery.

Phase 4 - Burnout

This is where it hits hard.

It's what I call the " I can't do this anymore phase."

You're not just tired anymore; you’re detached, disillusioned, and even resentful.

You start questioning everything—your career, your purpose, your worth.

The very idea of going back to work fills you with dread, but you don’t see a way out.

You’re still doing everything, but it feels like you're giving from an empty cup.

Withdrawing from friends, family, and even your responsibilities.

You might also feel a constant sense of failure or emptiness.

Self-care is neglected, and small tasks feel monumental.

You may also experience physical symptoms such as stomach issues, insomnia, or frequent illness.

Whether it’s a therapist, coach, or wellness program, having a guide to help you through this phase is key to recovery.

Phase 5 - Habitual Burnout:

Burnout has become your normal.

You’re running on fumes, disconnected from your passions, your energy, and even yourself.

Women in this phase often convince themselves that "this is just life," believing that the exhaustion, the tears in the parking lot, the constant overwhelm is all there is.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

This where you have the chronic health problems, deep depression, and hopelessness

You might feel like a shell of your former self.

This is the most serious phase, where burnout has become a way of life. To escape, you’ll need a complete lifestyle overhaul and significant support.

You might recognize yourself in one or more of these phases.

And if you're here, reading this, I want you to know something:

Burnout is NOT a badge of honor.

It’s not a phase to just "push through."

It's real. It's dangerous. And it's preventable.

It’s okay to admit you’re struggling.

It’s okay to want more for yourself.

But here’s the truth — the situation CAN change.

But it starts with you.

This is more than just weekends off or sneaking in a nap.

It’s about real, deep transformation.

The kind that takes you from barely surviving to actually thriving.

Imagine waking up feeling energized, with a clear mind and the freedom to focus on what truly matters to you.

This is about healing, nurturing yourself, and stepping into a life that doesn’t drain every ounce of your soul.

You deserve that. And it's possible.

But if you keep waiting for things to change on their own, you know the outcome.

More of the same. That hasn't worked over the past few months.

What if you took a step toward something different?
