The Menopause 'Secret' Octavia Spencer Just Blew Up

Sep 28, 2025

Octavia Spencer hopped on Instagram and introduced her menopause like an old friend who overstayed the weekend.

She calls her “Menny.”

I laughed. Then I exhaled.

Octavia’s post blew up with thousands of comments.

The response was instant, viral, and overwhelmingly supportive.

Fellow actresses like Halle Berry, Tyra Banks, and Holly Robinson Peete jumped into the comments, turning the post into a hilarious, supportive, and much-needed virtual group chat.

This is the ultimate "Yes, Girl!" affirmation.

Menopause often coincides with midlife stresses, from career shifts to the "empty nest."

To have a voice like Octavia's declare that this is a time for empowerment—not expiration—is a vital, liberating message.

It reframes the conversation from one of loss to one of powerful transition.

For too long, perimenopause and menopause have been whispered about in hushed tones, treated like a secret, or worse, used as a punchline.

This code of silence is the reason millions of women—from their late 30s to early 50s—feel like they’re suddenly losing their minds, their sleep, and the ability to find their keys.

For years women didn’t say the word.

They powered through meetings.

Kept spare tops in bags.

Blamed “stress” when your sleep went sideways and our patience ran off somewhere.

Naming it doesn’t fix it.

But it helps.

Once you say it, you stop arguing with yourself.

Your brain moves from “what’s wrong with me” to “okay, this is happening.”

And suddenly you can tell a friend.

Loop in your doctor.

What starts with a funny nickname on Instagram should end with a commitment to our health.

If you are in your 40s or 50s (or even earlier!), use this moment as a catalyst:

Educate Yourself: Learn the difference between perimenopause and menopause.

Talk About It: Share your experience with friends, family, and your doctor. If you're struggling, know you are not alone.

Advocate for Yourself: Find a healthcare provider who specializes in or is knowledgeable about menopausal health and treatment options.

So here’s an idea.

Have your Octavia moment.

And own it.

Octavia is reminding us that our wisdom, power, and beauty do not diminish when our hormones shift. In fact, many women find this phase to be one of the most creatively and personally empowering.

Menopause is a transition, not an expiration date.

And you get to decide what this chapter looks like.

If you want a partner while you figure this out, I am here.
