Are You Afraid You’re About to Have a Mental Health Breakdown?
Nov 10, 2024
This week, I spoke to two women.
Both are successful, accomplished—people who have it together.
They’re leading teams and high-achievers.
But behind closed doors, it’s a different story.
One told me, “When I get home, my kids want to talk. They’re excited to see me. They just want me to be mom.”
But after the day she’s had, she doesn’t even have that left.
She goes to the garage and just…sits.
Sits in silence, gathering herself for what’s next.
She’s so drained that she finds herself snapping at everyone.
Short on patience, quick to argue, just…tired.
She told me, “I’m afraid I’ll have a breakdown.”
And then, she told me something that struck deep: “I don’t even want to hear anyone’s problems anymore.”
She used to care. But burnout stole that part of her.
The other woman shared that before work, she’d sit in her car in the parking lot, needing 30 minutes just to walk through the office door.
At home, she carried it all—work stress, family stress, taking care of her parents, every responsibility piling up.
It’s to the point where she feels like she could explode. And that’s what happened.
One day, she handed her baby over to her husband a little too forcefully and walked out.
She didn’t want to be this person.
But burnout can turn us into strangers to ourselves.
They’re not alone. This story?
I’ve heard it so many times.
There’s nothing more painful than feeling so empty you can’t even be the person you used to be.
But there’s hope.
I had a client in that situation.
Through coaching, she learned to put up boundaries at work—small steps at first.
We focused on carving out moments of peace for herself, and she finally had time to breathe.
With each session, she built new habits, restored her energy, and reconnected with herself and her family.
The transformation was incredible.
She started coming home with energy for her kids, her conversations stopped feeling like a chore, and she no longer had to sit in her car just to face the evening.
