Why Your Team Burns Out (and How You Can Help)

Mar 24, 2024

Why should you care about burnout?

Because it’s real. Dangerous and expensive.

In today's newsletter, we'll explore the causes of burnout, its effects, and, most importantly, steps you can take to help prevent burnout on your team.

Let’s first understand what burnout is NOT.

Burnout isn't just about feeling tired or stressed.

It's a complex interplay of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion.

Burnout can lead to decreased motivation, increased errors, and diminished morale.

Now we’re clear on how it shows up.

It’s essential to understand the causes.

Ignoring these warning signs can be expensive.

Consider these factors:

  • Workload: Are team members juggling too many tasks without adequate resources or support?
  • Control: Do employees feel they have little say in decision-making or how they approach their work?
  • Recognition: Are achievements and contributions overlooked or undervalued? Do you thank your team?

Now that we've identified the burnout triggers, let's examine how you can help.

  • Delegate with Purpose: Empower team members by delegating tasks effectively and allowing autonomy.
  • Recognize your team: Celebrate achievements and show appreciation regularly to boost morale. Ask folks how they like to be celebrated and do it. Create opportunities for team building.
  • Prioritize Well-being: Implement wellness initiatives and work-life balance practices.

These are simple actions you can take today.

Failing to address burnout's root causes can result in costly consequences—diminished performance, increased absenteeism, and a toxic work culture.
