How is Your Team Handling the Holiday Season?🍂🕯️

burnout humanresources leadership wellness Nov 27, 2022

It’s the holiday season and the busiest time for leaders. You are leading end-of-year conversations and reflections with your team. You are planning holiday parties and celebrating progress.

But you are also asking important questions. Did your company meet its 2022 goals? How are your staff members performing? You are setting goals for 2023 and are optimistic about the future.

But remember that the holiday season might not be so jolly for all. Some workers may also be burnt out and not feel great. Your staff may have lost loved ones, or this may be their first holiday without a parent or a child. This creates sadness. Thus, your conversations need to be deliberate.

Here are three questions you can ask during your end-of-year reflection.

  1. Ask your employee how they are feeling about the holidays.
  2. Ask your employee if they accomplished their personal goals for the year.
  3. Ask your employee about their goals for 2023.

The most important thing you can do is listen. In his book Heart First, David Grossman says you must ask heartfelt questions.  This shows that you (1) hear them and (2) validate their feelings. The data shows that employees who know their leaders care are less likely to leave the organization.
