High Standards or Burnout Culture?

Dec 03, 2023

Let's discuss something important—the not-so-great stuff that happens when you keep pushing our teams too much.

It's time to dig into how our high expectations might affect the people working hard to make things happen.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't have high expectations, but it shouldn't burn your team.

There's a different story behind all the success stories—one of stress and struggle for those trying to meet our super-high standards.

You must look at what happens when people feel the pressure: lower spirits, more stress, and even less room for creativity or new ideas.

Think about it.

Whenever a deadline or an assignment is missed, it's not just a problem on paper.

Or someone calls out sick (every week).

It's a sign that your teams might be having a tough time.

A team not doing well isn't just a work issue; it's a sign that something deeper might be wrong.

As leaders, it's time for a reality check.

This isn't about blaming anyone; it's about your impact on your team.

So what can you do about it?

Step 1: Team Pulse Check

Engage with your team individually.

Managers must use 1:1s. Ask open-ended questions about their workload, stress levels, and overall job satisfaction.

This isn't just about ticking boxes; it's about creating a safe space for genuine conversations. Are they feeling stretched thin?

Are there signs of increased stress?

This step is the pulse check to understand the current status of well-being.

Step 2: Analyze Missed Deadlines and Late Work

Take a close look at recent instances of missed deadlines or late assignments.

Don't just view them as isolated incidents—examine them as symptoms of deeper issues. Are these occasional hiccups, or is there a pattern emerging?

Identifying the root causes behind these lapses will provide insights into the impact of high expectations on your team's performance.

Step 3: Seek Anonymous Feedback

Encourage your team to share anonymous feedback.

This is important if your team isn’t having courageous conversations.

Create a platform where they can express their thoughts without fear of repercussions.

This could be a survey or an online suggestion box.

Anonymity ensures honesty, and their insights might reveal aspects of the work environment impacting their well-being.

Once you've gathered this intel, please review it and develop actionable solutions.

Whether it involves recalibrating workloads or adjusting timelines,

Remember, it's not about lowering standards; it's about finding that sweet spot where excellence thrives without compromising the well-being of your incredible teams.
